Also my dry brushed highlights were picked out even more nicely once the shade had done its work. I tried mixing the effect with Army Painter Matt Varnish too and that works just fine, in fact for things that aren't supposed to be slimy or you don't want gloss effect on then it's a perfect mix. Personally I really like this product, the end effect is a rock solid varnish coupled with a good shading effect thrown in with it.
Depending on how thickly you have applied it, it can obscure detail, fortunately the only parts obscured by my initial tests were the feet-base join which as you all know is easily fixed with some glue and flock. This varnish dries nicely and hugs the deeper creases in a model while creating a nice gradual shade. Having not really used liquid varnish before I was a little worried about what would happen. After the initial hour I left the models to their own devices and came back the next day. Then I left them to dry but kept an eye on them for about an hour so I could catch any troublesome drips or move any build up of the varnish away from more finely detailed areas. Once I was happy with the coating I then moved the varnish around with an old brush so I could pick out certain areas and remove any bubbles. The Quickshade itself is quite thick but it spreads nicely for about 30mins whilst it starts to set and dry. To apply the Quickshade I held onto the base and dunked the whole model, then removed it and let the excess drip off the prominent points. I figured if all else fails I will have given them an even more dramatic effect. It takes about 12-24hrs for it to fully cure.īeing initially sceptical about the varnish/wash mix I highlighted my models before dunking them. It comes in a big pot, big enough to dip a large round based model in (minus large claws/wings). The idea is that you undercoat and paint the model as usual however you can leave large areas of the model as a single colour and then dunk the model in the Quickshade which will pick out the creases and crevices for you by seeping into them and leave the raised areas lighter by only coating them with a thin layer. As you know I'm a fan of darker paint schemes so of course I opted to go for the Dark tone. It comes in three different hues: Soft, Strong and Dark depending on your desired results.
